Corfu: the island where music lives in every stone.

When I first saw a brass band marching through the narrow streets of Corfu's Old Town, I realized that a holiday here is not just an event, but a part of the soul of the island.
### Music that unites centuries
There is no major festival in Corfu without its legendary Philharmonic Orchestra . Imagine:
→ Marching musicians in old uniforms, whose ancestors played these same tunes 200 years ago.
→ Greeks and tourists pour out onto balconies with lace napkins, waving them in time, just like Venetian ladies once did.
→ Children running after the orchestra and trying to imitate the drummers' movements with their sticks.
This is not a concert. This is a living history , where every resident is its keeper.
### Why does this move me to tears?
Because here music is not a background, but a language spoken:
- Sorrow during Holy Week, when funeral marches sound in the rain.
- The joy of Easter is when the whole city dances to Spianadze's "Graziano".
- Pride on the Day of Unification with Greece, when the orchestra leads the procession to the fortress.
It is no coincidence that the Ionian University has the only music department in Greece that studies the European tradition. Corfu is a bridge between Italy and Hellas, and its orchestra preserves this dialogue .
My First Experience: How I Became Part of a Tradition
I remember the evening when I accidentally found myself at an orchestra rehearsal near the old fortress. The musicians didn’t notice the audience – they played for the sea, for the stars, for the walls that remembered the British and the French. And then the conductor suddenly turned to us and smiled: “This is our way of saying ‘welcome’.”
Since then I know: to understand Corfu, you must not listen to it, but hear it.

P.S. Have you ever seen a whole city freeze to the sound of one march? If so, share in the comments! If not, come in April for Easter. The orchestra is waiting.
