Siga-siga: why the Greeks are not afraid of being late.

Updated: Apr 1

"Siga-siga" - I hear this phrase every day. In the store, when the salesperson is rummaging through the change. On the ferry, when we are "delayed" for an hour. Even when the doctor is late for an appointment, smiling: "Sorry, the coffee is taking too long!"

At first it was infuriating. How could you not value time? But one day an old woman in a village on Corfu told me: "My child, haste is when you run but don't know where. And here we only run after children and goats."

Siga-siga is not laziness. It is the belief that everything important will be done in time. That the sea will not run away, friends will not fall out of love, and the sun will rise tomorrow. Now I say this myself when I catch myself thinking: "We must do it faster!"

Do you know how to slow down?
